Automated leak testing of flexible packaging

Specifications and Customer requirements

A permanent, automated inspection of the sealing of biscuit packs is required, in order to detect any arising problem as early as possible, so corrective action can be taken immediately.

The inspection must run 24/7. 
The test must be non-destructive.

Budget Requirement

The unit must be able to be added to an existing production line without any major modifications. The equipment will be installed alongside the production line.

Objectives: Better monitor the sealing quality. Avoid producing large quantities of insufficiently sealed packages, reduce scrap, optimise output. Avoid Customer complaints.

Solution

The ASC 7400XS in conjunction with with a UR3e robot from Universal Robots is proposed. Packages are taken directly from the production line and placed in the instrument. The test is completed in less than 30 seconds, allowing an inspection rate of one pack every minute. FAIL packs are dropped in a Reject bin, an alarm is triggered to alert the operators.

Test Reports can be retrieved via a network port (RJ45).

Cycle time

Leak test : 15 to 30 seconds depending on product.
Including handling, loading & unloading : approximately 1 minute.
